Technorati

The top blogs this afternoon were #1 Breaking News and Opinion on the Huffington Post: Headlines "Israel masses more Troops, Tanks along Gaza Border". #2 Gismodo, the gadget guide. Very BUSY page, but there was an article on the first page that was interesting, titled "Best gadgets of 2008". #3 TechCrunch, #4 Engadget - the first article will get your blood pressure up: the gov. of Oregon is proposing a tax on your mileage since fuel efficient vehicles are cutting down on fuel tax. GRRRR!!!
#5 Boing Boing. I just had to look this up, just to see what it was! Weblog of cultural curiosities.
I suppose the tool I'd choose would be Ping us. This gives Blog quality guidelines and then allows you to send your blog for review.

Rollyo

This was fun! I actually did it without having to ask anyone questions. (First lesson). Unfortunately when I e-mailed Jean my "Shopping" list it didn't transfer.
I added three lists, News, Shopping and Health. To these I added my favorite sites, for the News: Cnn, Msn, ADN, Frontiersman. To Shopping: Coldwater Creek, Soft Surroundings, Athleta and Sahalia. To Health: Jillian Michaels, Cooking Light, Biggest Loser.

Internet Safety in a 2.0 world

I thought the article Frontline put out on PBS was excellent. They raised some good questions and thoughts. Kids these days ARE computer savey. BUT, they are also kids, not always with alot of common sense. Being able to create a "whole new person" that "isn't me at all" can be a ego trip that could ulitmately ruin a child or young adult.
Even if kids are extremely literate when it comes to technology I still feel that adults need to watch out for them.
Myspace had some good reminders for keeping safe....but again, some kids are going to go for the "risk" factor to get some excitement. I don't know that there is any easy answer, or any answer period. But this isn't something that is going to go away. For every problem solved probably 2-3 more are going to pop up. It's going to be an ongoing process.
I didn't create a page on any of the social networking sites. Being an extremely private person they just don't interest me. Perhaps it's my age? It all seems somehow so impersonal. I "interact" with young people almost daily that have absolutely no social skills and I think our lack of face to face interaction has done this generation a diservice. On the other hand in a world where people never seem to stay in one place more than a couple of years I think it's a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. MySpace and Facebook are obviously taking the place of phone calls and letter writing. Kids seem to enjoy it more and therefore do more of it...which is a good thing.
I thought the library sites on MySpace were terrific. Very creative and active. Judging from what I've read and seen I'd say the Juvenile and Young Adults are going to benefit/use this more than us "old timers"! How would you begin to estimate the time needed to answer questions, keep the site updated and attracting new people? Would anyone be able to "make changes" and how would this be monitored??? Just a few questions that pop into my mind.

Library Thing

I LOVE this site!!!! I think I could have spent the morning on it! I added a book I have just finished reading, "Faster Better Stronger" and one I've had for years and still read periodically, "Living a beautiful life". I even typed a review on the first book.
Going into the "talk" tab I pulled up Ivy's 2008 list. This lady has read 64 books so far this year, maybe more but she didn't start keeping track until later in the year. Yikes! And I thought I read alot.

Listen Alaska

Well, I downloaded the Overdrive Media Console and it actually went REALLY well! I didn't have to run to Jean for any verifications on what to do or what not to do......(that was so weird).
I uploaded "Pants on Fire" and listened to a few minutes of it.....don't think they could have found a better voice for that book. I then placed James Patterson's "1st to Die" on hold. Maybe it isn't any biggie for most people but I was thrilled to be able to do this! Won't be so intimidated when a patron asks questions about it now. (smile).

Wow! I think riding a bike is alot easier than opening a blog site! Hopefully it will be like riding a bike and the more I do it the easier it will become? Right now I feel downright stupid......hmmm.
